Top-10 Blunders in H&H Modeling
The following top ten list was presented at
the International Conference on Stormwater and Urban Water Systems Modeling
held in Toronto on February 24-25, 2005.
Disclaimer: These reasons are based on the
responses provided by the members of the SWMM-USERS discussion group. I am simply forwarding them without

to be offensive to anyone.
10. To a man with a hammer, every problem looks
like a nail (Wrongheadedness).
9. You lost a client after stating “we
are an expert in modeling water distribution systems using SWMM (Mechanicalness).
8. Bigger is better and size does matter (Complicatedness).
7. The Rational Method is a model and so is
Manning’s Equation (Grossness).
6. Modeling is not rocket science (Grossness).
5. My model is better than yours because I lost
my shirt paying for it (Expensiveness).
4. My model is more credible because Uncle Sam
paid for it (Cheapness).
3. I am the cheapest modeler around. I hate calibration (Grossness).
2. Continuous simulation is good for your
health because it frees you for several trips to gym every day (Hypercomprhensiveness).
1. Your daughter labeled you a hypocrite when
you advised her against a career in modeling (Stupidness).
The
above list was inspired by Seven Sins of Runoff Models (after Douglass B. Lee,
1973):
1. Hypercomprhensiveness
2. Grossness
3. Hungriness
4. Wrongheadedness
5. Complicatedness
