Top-50 Reasons for SWMM5

The following top ten list was presented at the International Conference on Stormwater and Urban Water Systems Modeling held in Toronto on February 21, 2003.

Disclaimer: These reasons are based on the responses provided by the members of the SWMM-USERS discussion group.  I am simply passing them on without comment.  This list has no technical or educational value; it's intended for entertainment only; and it is not intended to be offensive to anyone.

I received 50 entries.  The top ten are listed below.

10.    13.6% better than SWMM 4.4, or your money back.

9.      What the heck; I will try anything that’s for free.

8.      It was inevitable that today's "Viagra mentality" would spill over into the software industry and give stormwater modelers everywhere a much more robust SWMM product.

7.      Regulators were starting to catch on with SWMM4’s strength to produce any desired result.  Now we must re-confuse them.

6.      Goodbye DOS window - Hello blue screen of death!

5.      It keeps the old farts from understanding the code.

4.      It’s the new way to high-five: "Gimmee a SWMM5".

3.      Because "5" is an odd number, just like SWMM-Users.

2.      The only way to stop those darned philosophical quotes on your screen.

1.      I work for CDM.   Do I have a choice?

The remaining 40 reasons follow.

  1. "The SWMM 5" - sounds like a 50's group!!.
  2. It may be "SWMM 5", but it doesn't quit working at 5 o'clock!
  3. Just Windows, baby!!  (apologies to Al Davis).
  4. Gets great mileage!
  5. Love those SWMM 5 commercials where the two girls fight in the pool, screaming "RUNS FASTER!"  "MORE STABLE!"
  6. "Really, boss, the only training seminar on the new version is in Hawaii..."
  7. Almost as good a Christmas gift for engineers as the Clapper.
  8. "And away goes FORTRAN down the drain"
  9. Good Grief! Aren't the first nine reasons enough for you????
  10. Because "4" in Chinese sounds like "death", and SWMM4 has had its share of causalities.
  11. Because it's "goin' to take you higher"
  12. Discovery that the world does not consist of "blocks" but is really made up of Links and Nodes.
  13. We need something that will run on our Windows 95 machines.
  14. Truly Backwards Compatible!  HA HA HA - Good One!  Can you say job security?
  15. SWMM 4 was just too darned simplistic.
  16. It runs on PlayStation and xBox, right?
  17. You just type in the name of the city, and SWMM 5 will find all the data on the web and create the dataset for you!
  18. We just couldn't figure out how to stop printing all those darned quotes, so we had to re-write the whole code!
  19. Sure beats the sound of "Windows SWMM Version 2".
  20. SWMM5 is less buggy, and fewer bugs is better than proven results.
  21. Lew is a good guy.
  22. SWMM5 users are one-up on SWMM4 users.
  23. It is newer, faster, simpler, easier, and maybe as good.
  24. It's different, thank goodness.
  25. After EPA spends their money on SWMM5, they would put virus in SWMM4 to force us to stop using it.
  26. The last one still using FORTRAN will be put in a cave by 2005.
  27. No more Build-Up and Wash-Off Equations: USEPA no longer allowed to mention pollution.
  28. If we don't support this version then it will go the way of Windows SWMM!
  29. MTOM(Made to Order Modeling)...10,000 junctions and 20 pump stations.  5 year simulation at 5 second time intervals...  No problem, coming right up!
  30. Nine calibrated single event RDII models for a 15 mile interceptor with 20 cross connections...  I'll be done before lunch!
  31. Now the boss can demand twice the work in 0.001x the amount of time.
  32. Previous SWMM versions not buggy enough.
  33. "Nobody" codes in FORTRAN anymore.
  34. Raelians told me to evolve to advanced version or be left behind.
  35. Version 5 must be "1 better" than version 4.
  36. Version "4.4hu" too hard to spell.
  37. The first four SWMMs just didn't do it for me.
  38. Finally gives me a sound basis for complaining just how bad Windows SWMM (R.I.P. 1994) really was.
  39. Ran out of FORTRAN compilers large enough to handle SWMM4.
  40. Lew is my buddy.

Thanks to all the contributors!
